When you are decorating your baby’s nursery, here are some things you may wish to consider. Theme Selection Stick with themes that your child can grow and learn with. Such themes might include ponds with animals, jungle animals, under the sea, trees and nature, clouds and celestial (stars, moons, etc.). Depending on how many children you may have, these themes can be more versatile or even turn into a playroom later when you move the child into their own big kid rooms.

Paint Finish & Color Eggshell or satin finishes tend to be used in most nurseries rather than semi-gloss or flat finishes. Soft yellows and blues, sage greens, white eggshell, or soft earth tone shades are soothing colors that go well with anything. If you desire bright colors, you may want to wait till the child is of an age where they can appreciate it and when they know what theme they want for their room. If you are planning on including decorative artwork, you should consider the condition of the walls (e.g., are they textured or are they smooth)? If you change your mind after a couple of years and wish to paint over decorative artwork or even just wall paint, you may need to use primer and several coats of paint to cover the previous project. This is another good reason to stay away from really bright, saturated colors. Soft pastels and earth tones are very pleasing to young minds and tend to look more realistic. Kids are always taking on new ideas and interests. Even when they get older, depending on how many times you want to change a theme, try to stay with something they can grow with and that can be adapted for new interests. You can always alter or change bedding and window treatments to revamp the look of the look of the room.

Murals, Accents & Decorative Artists Consider meeting with a decorative artist when you have decided on a general theme. Have the bedding or picture of the bedding you wish to use for the nursery. A decorative artist can match the colors from the bedding or help create an overall theme that compliments that bedding choice for the room while, at the same time, will be able to grow with the child. They can also suggest a wall color. If you don’t want a large mural painting or are worried that a large mural will overpower a smaller nursery, you can get as nice of an effect with decorative painted accents. For example, you could frame existing fixtures (or maybe a mirror) with some whimsical swirls or starbursts in select areas. A dresser or toy chest can also be decorated to compliment a room theme. Add some creative window treatments and accessories to complete your room, and you’ll have a nursery you can be proud of and one that you won’t mind spending so much time in, especially in the middle of the night!
